Autonomous territorial governance and the preservation of territorial rights and biodiversity in the northern and eastern Amazon of Peru

Ongoing

From: 15/04/2024

To: 14/04/2029

Partners: Awajun Autonomous Territorial Government (GTAA)
Wampis Nation’s Autonomous Territorial Government (GTANW)

Associates: Fiscal sponsor: Centre for Public Policy and Human Rights - Peru Equidad (PE)

Stakeholders: Two hundred and fifty (250) communities and forty-two thousand (42,000) individuals.

The Autonomous Territorial Governments (GTAs) of the Awajun People and the Wampis Nation, with Tenure Facility’s support, are enhancing their ability to self-govern their territories as well as advance recognition of Indigenous rights to ancestral lands. The Awajun and Wampis are strengthening governance within their own Indigenous institutions, promoting bilingual education, building local capacities for territorial defence, implementing gender justice and youth inclusion practices and developing territorial advocacy strategies and exchanging good knowledge practices.

Encompassing 4.3 million hectares – an area around Denmark’s size- of intact forest and biodiverse land critical to the ecosystem of the Peruvian Amazon the project benefits 250 communities and 42,000 individuals. Notably, it supports the development of an alternative model of governance for Indigenous institutions which have no formal recognition. The project aligns with Tenure Facility’s strategy by advancing rights within Indigenous ancestral territories, complementing projects in other parts of Peru, while linking to similar movements elsewhere in the Amazon Basin.
