Stakeholders: Thirteen Indigenous Pygmy and local communities in the Bakano and Wanyanga sectors of Walikale territory will benefit directly from the project.
Through this project, the Integrated Programme for the Development of the Pygmy People (PIDP), representing Indigenous Peoples, together with two local nongovernmental organisations—the Council for Ancestral Lands and Talents of Rural Indigenous Women—aims to secure and protect traditional lands for Indigenous and local communities in Walikale Territory, eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo. PIDP is supporting these communities in obtaining local community forest concession (CFCL) titles over at least 150,000 hectares and strengthening local management structures. It also collaborates with the governance structures of two established CFCLs. The project will benefit 13 communities (two existing CFCLs and 11 new CFCLs) living in areas designated as ecological corridors between Kahuzi-Biéga National Park and Maiko National Park. The project aims to reduce existing land conflicts between Indigenous Peoples and local communities in the territory, strengthen Indigenous Peoples’ capacity, and promote the use of traditional knowledge in sustainable forest management, community conservation, and community forestry enterprise initiatives.
