Partners: Federation of Community Forestry Users Nepal (FECOFUN)

Stakeholders: Community Forest User Groups (CFUGs) and Indigenous Peoples. National, provincial and local governments and civil society.

Despite extensive legislation regulating forestry, and the country’s success in reversing deforestation and environmental degradation, the rights of forest communities in Nepal remain vulnerable. The project seeks to secure community and Indigenous Peoples’ forest rights while facilitating better governance and more inclusive sustainable development. It will achieve this by supporting the development of new local laws and regulations that are location-specific. These laws and regulations might include the recognition of customary forest lands and management practices, as well as enhanced rights to make use of forest products. The project will also prioritise the needs of women from local communities and Indigenous Peoples, recognising their frequent marginalisation in matters of natural resource governance and access to forest resources.
