Partners: Centre for the Sustainable Management of Tropical Forests (CAGDFT)
Stakeholders: 25 communities in the provinces of Kongo Central, Kwango, Kwilu, Mai-Ndombe, Sud-Ubangi et Nord-Ubangi.
Through this project, the Support Centre for Sustainable Management of Tropical Forests (CAGDFT) promotes community forest rights in six provinces in western Democratic Republic of the Congo: Kongo Central, Kwilu, Mai-Ndombe, Kwango, North Ubangi, and South Ubangi. The project works with communities to establish local community forest concessions (CFCLs) and prepare simple management plans outlining land-use considerations. It supports 25 communities in total: 13 communities that established CFCLs during the project’s first phase and 12 communities that plan to advance in the CFCL formalisation process during this second phase. The project emphasises the inclusion of Indigenous Peoples, women, and youth. Across the involved provinces, local nongovernmental organisations support project implementation: the Centre for Community Promotion and Education (CEPECO) in Kongo Central; the Congolese Resources Institute (CRI) in Kwilu; the Population Support Centre for Multisectoral Development (CADEM) and Geofirst Development in Mai-Ndombe; the Community Office for the Environment, Agriculture, and Sustainable Development (BCEAD) in North Ubangi; and the Evangelical Community of Christ in Ubangi (CECU) in South Ubangi. CAGDFT and its implementing partners work closely with the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development and are in continuous dialogue with the Congolese Institute for Nature Conservation (ICCN).
