Stakeholders: Tribal/Indigenous Peoples and other traditional forest dependent communities. Approximately 2 million forest dependent people and 19,583 communities. State governments including government departments and agencies, civil society, universities, business sector.

This project is split into three separate grants to the Indian School of Business (ISB), Vasundhara, and Society for Rural Urban and Tribal Initiative (SRUTI). They are collaborating to assist 19,583 communities use the Forest Rights Act to obtain secure community forest resource rights over 4.6 million hectares of forestlands in Odisha, Himachal Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Jharkhand. There are also project activities in five other states. Partners provide training about natural resource management plans, enterprise development, legal issues, and market development.

About the partners:  

ISB emphasises partnerships with state governments and the private sector. ISB support governments in the filing and approval of forest rights claims and have developed mobile apps to enhance efficiency and scaling-up. ISB also support female-dominated supply chains for non-timber forest products and evidence to show tenure security enables sustainable supply chains for forest-based businesses. They promote business working groups and facilitate purchasing agreements between companies and communities. 

Vasundhara focuses on the State of Odisha, where it has strong relations with the state government. Its activities include networking with civil society organisations and like-minded forums combined with capacity building.  

SRUTI harnesses its network of fellows to mobilise communities to claim and defend forest rights. They help process community forest rights claims, build alliances for social change, organise learning visits, training workshops, dialogues and consultations.
