Through the Porongaço project, the National Council of Extractivist Populations (CNS) and the Puxirum Fund, in partnership with the Institute for Society, Population and Nature (ISPN), acting as fiscal sponsor, aims to promote the land tenure regularisation of collective territories of extractivist communities in the state of Pará, Brazil.
The project seeks to protect approximately 1.7 million hectares of forested areas across 47 territories, benefitting about 26,663 families in over 100 communities. Activities include strengthening the State Network of Extractivist Women and Extractivist Youth and advancing formal land regularisation processes.
These activities will help reduce deforestation and degradation, and associated greenhouse gas emissions across the target area. The project has the support of important government agencies such as the Federal University of Pará (UFPA), Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation (ICMBio), National Institute for Rural Settlement and Agrarian Reform (INCRA), Secretariat of Federal Property (SPU), and the Pará Land Institute (ITERPA). The Federal University of Pará (UFPA) is also an important project partner.
