Advancing the Territorial Rights of Indigenous Peoples in the State of Roraima, Brazilian Amazon

Ongoing

From: 05/11/2025

To: 04/11/2030

Partners: The Indigenous Council of Roraima (CIR)

Stakeholders: The project will directly involve the Wapichana, Macuxi and Taurepang Peoples across 29 Indigenous territories in Roraima, where 57 communities have been affected by territorial reductions. Its core territorial rights actions will focus on nine Indigenous lands, while indirectly benefiting around 263 Indigenous communities and 60,000 people across 35 Indigenous territories.

Through this project, the Indigenous Council of Roraima (CIR) aims to advance the demarcation of four Indigenous territories, remove intruders from one Indigenous territory, and recover approximately 496,000 hectares across four Indigenous territories in Brazil.

The project strengthens local governance by training protection agents and supporting the Rutî Fund, while working closely with the National Indigenous Peoples Foundation (FUNAI), a government agency, to ensure effective legal protection for these areas. The project includes transboundary work through partnerships with Indigenous Peoples of Guyana. By supporting territorial and environmental management plans and Indigenous women’s political and economic autonomy, the project helps consolidate CIR as a central pillar of resistance and community development.
