Stakeholders: 40 communities in six districts where both communities and local government have demonstrated their interest in advancing land rights
Indonesia’s national government has made its eastern island the province of Papua a priority in its Agrarian Reform and Sosial Forestry Program, offering a significant opportunity for recognising Indigenous People’s land rights. In Tanah Papua, which means the land of Papua and encompasses the islands six Indonesian provinces, the many customary territories have been mapped, and some districts have even recognised the rights of specific indigenous communities, but this recognition is incomplete and hasn’t reached all 39 districts in the region.
Tenure Facility is supporting a 5-year project to recognise the land rights of indigenous communities in Papua, all with the aim of accelerating and simplifying the process for communities to gain recognition for their lands. This project will focus primarily on six districts where both the communities and local governments have shown an interest in advancing land rights. The project will combine expert technical assistance, research, and facilitation of dialogue to assist local governments in creating a legal framework for recognising these rights.
