For decades, Ecuadorian law has provided no mechanism for indigenous communities to receive title to their ancestral territories within nationally protected areas. There are only some exceptions of few titled tracts of land where communities could negotiate weak and temporary land use agreements, with limited capacities for self-management.
Thus, the partners are helping indigenous communities obtain title to their ancestral lands within national protected areas. They are collaborating with the Ministry of Environment (MAATE) to design regulations and procedures for that purpose. They are also involved in community mapping, conflict resolution, obtaining legal status for community organisations, initiating dialogue with protected area authorities in select Amazonian communities to pilot these processes. These pilots should lead to the titling of at least 122,000 hectares.
