Consolidation of indigenous territories and rights in Madre de Dios Peruvian Amazon

Ongoing

From: 01/07/2023

To: 30/06/2028

Partners: Federación Nativa de Madre de Dios (FENAMAD)

Stakeholders: 38 indigenous communities composed of 5,585 people that belong to 7 different indigenous nations (Ese Eja, Harakbut, Matsigenka, Yine, Shipibo, Amahuaca and Quichua Runa) will benefit directly from project activities. Additionally, approximately 1,000 Indigenous Peoples in isolation and initial contact will also benefit.

FENAMAD will work with seven different indigenous ethnicities in 38 communities in the Madre de Dios region of Peru to strengthen tenure security covering 518,000 hectares. The project will also work with four indigenous nations – Esa Eja, Harakbut, Matsigenka and Yine – to advance claims and extend rights over ancestral territories that overlap with four protected areas: Manu National Park, Bahuaja-Sonene National Park, the Tambopata National Reserve and the Amarakaeri Communal Reserve. At the same time, FENAMAD will improve protections for the approximately 1,000 indigenous individuals living in isolation and initial contact, including formal recognition of the 800,000-hectare Madre de Dios Territorial Reserve. A complementary set of actions will support forest monitoring among titled communities, defence of environmental defenders, and advancement of women and youth leadership. The total area of project influence is 7.3 million hectares. The project will complement activities funded by the separate GEF-funded Inclusive Conservation Initiative.
