Guaranteeing and protecting the land rights and traditional knowledge of Indigenous communities in the Walikale territory in North Kivu, eastern DRC

Ongoing

From: 01/04/2024

To: 30/03/2029

Partners: Integrated Programme for the Development of the Pygmy People (PIDP)

Associates: Council for the Land of Ancestors (CTA)
Talents of Rural Indigenous Women

Stakeholders: Thirteen Indigenous Pygmy and local communities in the Bakano and Wanyanga sectors of Walikale territory will benefit directly from the project.

The Integrated Pygmy Development Program (PIDP) aims to secure and protect traditional lands for 13 Indigenous and local communities in the Walikale territory. PIDP is supporting communities in obtaining Local Community Forestry Concessions (referred to as CFCL in the local langue of French) titles that capture 150,000+ hectares – an area almost as big as Kuwait – while strengthening local management structures.

An unintended consequence of conservation in the region has meant that in the area between Kahuzi Biega National Park and Maiko National Park, Indigenous communities have faced forced evictions and displacements. A large portion of their ancestral lands has been designated as ‘ecological corridors’ under the global target to protect 30% of the planet for nature by 2030 (30×30). Recognising the rights and roles of indigenous Pygmy Peoples in nature conservation and respecting their ancestral rights to the forests is more crucial than ever. Supporting their requests for CFCL is a primary option to guarantee collective forest management and user rights for Indigenous Peoples and local communities in the DRC.
