Mali pilot project leaders, mayors and government officials joined colleagues from Niger and Burkina Faso in the first-ever Tenure Facility-funded exchange visit 11 to 15 June 2017. Treeaid, a SIDA-funded initiative to improve local forest governance in Burkina Faso, hosted the group.
Participants learned how Burkina Faso’s multi-stakeholder forest dialogue mechanism accelerated the transfer of state responsibilities for forest management to communities, a lesson that can be replicated in Mali and Niger. They were impressed by the way traditional leaders provide oversight for joint forest management by government technical services, municipalities and villages. They also saw firsthand how good forest management can improve women’s incomes through the sale of non-timber forest products.
The participants agreed to continue exchanging their experiences for the benefit of communities in the three countries.
