Securing and protecting land rights and other collective rights of Indigenous Peoples of Suriname

Stakeholders: 4,600 Indigenous Peoples, representing approximately 1,500 families will be directly benefited. Indirectly, the project will impact 22.000 people spread over 52 villages.

At least 18 Indigenous communities in the West Suriname, Wayambo, Central/Para, East Suriname and South Trio and South Wayana regions will work, through their traditional authority organisation VIDS, to secure and protect approximately 1.4 million hectares of collective land covering. Project activities include demarcating, mapping and monitoring traditional territories, capacity strengthening of communities’ governance and management systems and promoting the effective participation of Indigenous leaders in legislative processes to achieve the legal recognition and protection of Indigenous peoples’ rights, particularly territorial and governance rights.
