Cultivating trust, respect and autonomy at scale
SECURE LAND RIGHTS ALLOW COMMUNITIES TO PROTECT FORESTS, SUSTAIN CULTURES AND DRIVE LASTING ENVIRONMENTAL AND SOCIAL IMPACT.
Indigenous Peoples, Afro-descendant Peoples, and local communities play a crucial role in delivering large-scale emissions reductions and ongoing climate resilience when their land tenure is secure. Their guardianship is one of the reasons why we still have so many standing forests, despite deforestation growing at an alarming rate (in 2023, we lost 6.37 million hectares of forest, an area almost equivalent to the size of Ireland).
It is vital to keep scaling efforts to secure land and forest tenure to benefit people and planet, locally and globally. For Tenure Facility, that means increasing large-scale, long-term support to community organisations, enhancing their leadership and autonomy, while offering our partners the resources they need to make the most of their strategies, skills and drive.
Their dedication has grown our reach: by the end of 2024, we were actively supporting 33 projects in 20 countries, with two more countries in the pipeline for 2025.
This article offers a glimpse into some of the incredible results our partners achieved in 2024 with our support and donor investment.
