Strong Roots Congo aims to establish a vast network of community-managed forests spanning one million hectares between Kahuzi-Biega National Park and Itombwe Nature Reserve in the Democratic Republic of Congo. This initiative supports Indigenous Peoples (IP) and local communities (LC) to take charge of their forests through community forest concessions (CFCL), by demarcating and protecting 400,000 hectaresand area almost as big as Rhode Islandof pristine primary forests across nine CFCL and collaborating with seven chiefdoms to develop comprehensive management plans for an additional 600,000 hectares within 25 CFCLs. This project also integrates traditional ecological knowledge and practices, to protect biodiversity and enhance local livelihoods. The project is co-funded by the Rainforest Trust showcasing a collaborative effort to foster environmental sustainability and community empowerment in the DRC.
