Securing and Protecting Land Rights and Other Collective Rights of the Saamaka People of Suriname

Stakeholders: Approximately 15,000 Saamaka people representing 10 communities will be directly benefited. Indirectly the project will impact an estimate 25,000 Saamaka People spread over 74 villages.

VSG, with Tenure Facility’s support is working with Indigenous and tribal communities across Suriname to secure and protect the collective land rights of 15,000 Saamaka People in 10 villages covering around 450,000 hectares of forestlands. VSG is implementing a wide range of activities such as territorial monitoring and mapping, conflict management, scaling partnerships and strengthening villages’ traditional governance and knowledge systems. VSG expects the project outcomes to be expanded in the future helping secure land rights of more Indigenous and Tribal Peoples villages across the country.
