The Tenure Facility is a learning organization, and lessons are informing the its development, including lessons on: niche, stakeholder participation, project preparation, communication and management strategies, and financial management. To date, the lessons learned can be summarized as follows:
- There is a strong demand for investment in collective rights, using flexible, substantive, and efficient modalities that are responsive to the needs of communities and Indigenous Peoples.
- Tenure Facility incubation is generating excitement and validation among Indigenous Peoples’ proponents and collaborators whose contributions are informing the design of an instrument that will support collective rights.
- There is strong complementarity with existing institutions (e.g., FIP, DGM, ILC, Farm and Forest Facility, UN-REDD, FAO) and existing initiatives at the country level (e.g., REDD+). There is high demand for engagement by operational staff from institutions such as the World Bank who view the Facility as a positive addition that can leverage achievement of desired outcomes from their investments.
- The Tenure Facility provides added value* by bringing: (i) clear focus on land and forest tenure and collective rights, (ii) strategic, synergetic, scalable and coordinated action to identify and solve key bottlenecks, (iii) projects owned by legitimate organizations representing indigenous/local community interests; (iv) flexible and quick financing avoiding overly burdensome requirements and procedures, and (v) reaching local level with innovative arrangements to foster local partnerships and joint action with governments and private sector.
- The Tenure Facility has demonstrated that it can rapidly respond to requests, with an average of only four months between initial concept note and the dispersal of funds.
- The Tenure Facility is being lauded for its mission to address a key concern of different organizations within development organizations, including departments tasked with advancing human rights, economic development, agricultural development, forest conservation, and climate change.
